Acquainting with Amir Chakhmagh Square
Amir Chakhmagh is a name of a Square in historical context of Yazd which composed of a complex of different constructions such as a Bazaar, a Tekyeh, a mosque, two Abanbars (water reservoirs), and a Boghe (shrine or tomb), and is considered as one of the most prominent historical and touristy complexes of Yazd. Every construction has specific characteristics which increase their value.
The history of Amir Chakhmagh Square
Amir Chakhmagh Square dates back to 16th century and time of Teymurid reign in Iran and has been constructed by Amir Jalaledin Chakhmagh. He was one of the commanders of Shahrokh Teymurid and after becoming Yazd’s governor, in cooperation with his wife, Setti Fatima Khatoon, constructed a complex for Yazd welfare composed of a Tekyeh, a square, a public bath, caravansaries, a Khaneghah, Qanat, cold water well.
The most important building of this complex is a mosque called “New Congregational Mosque” which is located in a quarter named “Koye Dahook Sofla” (Down Dahook Quarte). Amir Jalaledin Chakhmagh constructed a square in front of the mosque to make a different glitter. That square known Amir Chakhmagh Square since that time and later the mosque also called ” Amir Chakhmagh mosque”. Today this square is steady after passing long time and welcomes many tourists from all over the world as a historical attraction.
” Amir Chakhmagh mosque” which is known as “New congregational mosque” or “Dahook Mosque” is the most ancient construction of this square and in regard to beauty, spaciousness, and importance among mosques of Yazd are second after “Congregational Mosque”. Amir Chakhmagh mosque” was far from the city before “Mohammad Shah Qajar” era but gradually the city got bigger and now it is in the context of the city.
The other parts of Amir Chakhmagh Square”
In addition to the above mentioned parts, there are a bath and caravansaries in Amir Chakhmagh Square which are “Baftiha caravansary and bath” in the west of Tekyeh and ” Sha’ban Caravansary” on the left of the Tekyeh or the northern part of the square.
Beside these historical elements, the pond in front of Amir Chakhmagh Tekyeh is also considered as one of the beauties of this square which has some copper statues inside. These statues which are the product of different sculptors art added to this complex in two past decades and their faces have been designed so that they depict the role and importance of water in the province and kind of “Saghaei” (Giving water) culture.
