Lariha house at a glance
Yazd is known thanks to its historical mansions and its wind catchers which have grown tall on every corner of the city. When you step on Fahadan’s alleys the doors of historical houses tempt you strangely and attract you to themselves. Lariha house is one of these houses which has shown many spectacular glitters.
The characteristics of Yazdi architecture are observed in every place of this house. There is no house in Yazd which does not respect keeping the privacy of the family in its construction. Looking inside the house is completely impossible without the owner’s permission.
Beside vicinity and closeness in spaces between two different properties, in all ancient houses in Yazd, the style of constructing is in a such way that the privacy and regard of no residents are exceeded and calm and comfort are presented to them.
Building wind catcher and existing much shadow and cool spaces in summers are important characteristics of architecture in desert cities especially in Yazd which are observed in Lariha house as well. In aristocratic houses it is common to exist an artistic space with mirror work and plaster work embellishments and Lariha house shows off its being upscale by its mirror room with mirror work of 50 – 60 years ago. Building tall pillars and capitals in the hall and most importantly the “Gereh chini” of doors of rooms with colored glasses are spectacular embellishments that have made this building very eye-catching.
This house measures 1700m and its carcass measures 1200m. As entering the house you keep your eye for its doors, windows, sash windows, and painted and mirrored rooms which picture one of the beautiful and great samples of aristocratic houses of 13th century.
Constructing this building dates back to Qajar era in 1867 and its antiquity is about 150 years. The walls of this house were secure shelters for different generations of Lariha families and they observed bringing up their children here.
Today this building attracts many interested visitors as one of the noble sample of Iranian architecture and it has placed the museum of documents in its inside.
This house also was the place of photographing one of the most important series called “Haniyeh”.
Enter Lariha house
Entering the house, we encounter different knockers on the door which were designed for men and women separately and every which creates special sounds. Its plan pictures its unique characteristics. This historical building consists of a complex of 3 yards and 6 houses along with verandas, halls, rooms, and a façade, and a porch.
The bigger yard is the main yard and of high importance and the second and third yards are of lower importance and size.
The underground spaces are all over the building and make it possible to use the space usefully. The kitchen which a hole has been contrived in its ceiling, the warehouse of the building has been located on its western corner.
