The structure of Persian Gardens – the masterpiece of ancient Iran art and architecture
Persian garden is a special kind of architecture and structure of building garden and palace which has been invented and performed by Iranian people.
This kind of garden with exquisite and splendid design is a symbol of architectural, historical, and cultural opulence of Iran.
In Persian gardens you will find the life and flow. The flowers and plants, flowing water, and so on are just parts of this kind of garden which have created a permanent complex during the history by its skillful design. So that this design and structure have been registered in UNESCO’s world heritage list.
These gardens are parts of paradise on the earth. Walking by the flowing water, seeing beautiful fountains, caressing the live nature, very tall trees, and the view of building and palace constructed in the garden will create an indescribable feeling for you.
The history of Persian garden
Many researchers find Pasargadae as the most ancient Persian garden, they have reasonable argumentation for their ideas, there are findings like small ponds, streams, and individual buildings next to Royal garden (Achaemenid).
The researchers argued that Pasargadae garden has been constructed by the command of Cyrus The Great and that he specified the way of planting trees, architectural style, and its composing geometry. After Cyrus The Great, the other Achaemenid kings continued to build the gardens with this structure. Xenophon, the Greek historian, said about constructing Royal garden with special geometry characteristics at the time of Cyrus Π which the many find it a pattern for completely geometrical Persian gardens.
This pattern of garden continued after the Achaemenid and the relics of this kind belonging to Parthian and Sasanid dynasties also have been found. The most ancient document which remained from Sasanid period is the Xerxes relief of hunting in Taqe Bostan in Kermanshah. This relief may show the plan and design of Persian garden.
Safavids are also of skillful garden builders. In this period building gardens in great scale and in consistent with general structure of the city can be observed.
The role of water in Persian garden architecture
Before analyzing the importance of water in Persian garden architecture, its vital role in the life must be pointed out. Iran has been an arid and sere country, but using historical technologies to use water resources, water went beyond its vital role and found itself in art and architecture.
This comforting and relaxing place had also charming beauty thanks to fountains.
The use of water does not end to these cases in architecture, the reflection of light in water acts like a mirror and the beauty of the garden and coverage of the plants and so on can be observed once again in the water of pond and pools.
Green space of Persian garden
