What is the Holy fire?
Totally the holy fires of Zoroastrians, are some kinds of related fires to the religious or mythological ceremonies and there are special formalities for making them. The fire in “Mazdisna” (the Zoroastrianism) is being reckoned as one of the best given things of the Ahoura Mazda (the only God of the ancient Iranian and Zoroastrians) and is being remembered as a mediator between the creator and the creature. In Avestaa the fire is called as the son of the Ahoura Mazda for several times and because of that, the Zoroastrianism religion considered special rules for that. For example nobody should blow to the fire and make it pollutant. Even the fire guard also should put a special mask which is called “Pedaam” on his mouth and nose.
How the Varhoraam fire is being provided?
One of the most superordinate fires in the religious ceremonies of the Zoroastrianism, is Varhoraam which its preparation needs lots of time and costs a lot and it`s rarely been provided. For making this fire, 15 different fire and the sky lightning (totally 16 fires) is being gathered which are such as: Dyer, king or governor, potter, brick maker, mendicant, goldsmith, bank, blacksmith, armorer, baker, distillation, the army commander, shepherd, religious leader, sky lightning and dead burner.
The carrying ceremony of this fire is also special. They put it on a flat and four clergies say religious prayers while carrying it until they arrive at the destination. Among Zoroastrians, they call putting the fire on its place “sitting fire on the throne”.
This fire should be lighting forever because according to the religious beliefs it belongs to all people and everybody has a portion in it.
The holy fire in the Yazd Fire temple
By the time of the kingdom of the Sassanid empire in Iran, there were 3 fires that because of high antiquity, had more esteem and splendor and people called them the “Varhoraam fire” which means the victory fire. The “Azar faranbagh” fire temple in the Kariyan city of Fars was one of the fire temples which had the Varhoraam fire inside.
This fire was brought to Yazd due to stoppage of the stranger`s attack and placed inside the great fire temple of the city, but this fire temple was destroyed around 1117 A.D. the Zoroastrians hide the holy fire inside a cave in “EshKaft –Yazdan” mountain (where was between “aqdaa” and “pars banoo”) to keep it safe. This fire was in this cave for 30 years until it was transferred to a Zoroastrian village around Yazd and after that it was transferred from a village to another for 200 years due not to let strangers to reach it.
In the next years, they construct a small fire temple for keeping this fire to protect it better. By the announcement of Reza shah for the innovation of the Yazd Fire temple, the place of this fire was specified and it was transferred there in March 1942.
