Mahan Shazdeh (Prince) Garden, A green miracle in the desert of Kerman

Shazdeh garden, a green jewel in desert
In not so distant past, it seemed that the best place to build a luxurious garden was the middle of Kerman-Bam road on the ancient silk way; a garden which called Shazdeh later on.
Nowadays this garden still stands and shows its exquisiteness and splendor off at the heart of the desert and shines like a jewel in arid city of Kerman. Fertile ground, enough sunshine, gentle winds and water access have made it possible construct such an admirable structure. One may find it strange to see a garden in such an area but it has challenged this fact by its tall trees and the pleasant sound of flowing water as if entering the garden, you see completely different world protecting you from the heat of the sun.
Nowadays this eye catching garden, not only has kept historical and architectural elements but also has been changed into a resort as well as been provided with a hotel and restaurant. The fame and popularity of this garden is to the extent that many people prefer to celebrate the New Year ceremony there.
Why is it so lush?
As you enter the garden, what surprises you more is the flowing of water that makes the life possible for the trees. The water flowing in the garden is provided with Tigran River and aqueduct that originate in the snow of Joupar mount. This water stream enters the garden from the highest part of it and flows in a wonderful distribution and irrigation system in order to water variable tall trees.
Steep slopes which are considered as the primary bases of gardens make the water flow up to down as a stream. There are pavements with narrow streams beside the right and left sides of the main stream which separate green belts from the side walk.
Fountains and smart irrigation system
Some of the outstanding characteristics of Iranian gardens that smart Iranian architects used in Shazdeh garden are waterfalls and fountains, flowing of water in horizontal and vertical levels and using the ground slope to conduct water.
The flow of water as a stream continues in front of the mansion to the entrance and pours into two basins. This water not only irrigates the plants but beautifies the garden. Besides, fountains in these basins have increased freshness and created a very special atmosphere.
